The Gurkha Kitchen

If you ever find yourself near Maidstone West Railway Station, hungry and curious for something different, The Gurkha Kitchen might just surprise you-in all the best ways. Nestled conveniently at Station Approach, this restaurant blends the bold flavors of Nepalese cuisine with Indian classics, in a setting that feels both warm and welcoming. Whether you’re a local on lunch break or a solo traveler in search of an authentic food experience, this spot ticks a lot of boxes.

The first thing that sets The Gurkha Kitchen apart is its well-balanced ambiance. It’s got that casual-chic vibe with soft lighting, live music on selected nights, and even a fireplace for those cozy evening dinners. Accessibility is well-considered, with a wheelchair-accessible car park and seating that makes it a welcoming space for all guests. If you're after convenience, they’ve got delivery and takeaway options ready to roll-but honestly, dining in is where this place shines.

Now, let’s talk food. This menu isn’t just extensive-it’s adventurous. The Momo dumplings are an absolute must, serving up that perfect Nepalese street food punch in every bite. Prefer something with a bit more creaminess? The Korma is indulgent and aromatic, best paired with pilau rice or a fluffy garlic naan from their generous Naan Bread Basket. Their Paneer Tikka and Onion Bhaji hit all the right spice notes for vegetarians, and for carnivores, the Chicken Gurkhali brings a bold, peppery heat that leaves a lasting impression.

If you’re into grilled dishes, the Gurkha Mixed Grill is a powerhouse-offering a variety of meats that are well-marinated, char-grilled, and deeply satisfying. Or dive into the Gurkha MIS MA’s with Keema Rice if you're in the mood for something hearty and unique to this kitchen. There’s also Chilli Chicken Fry, which is fiery, juicy, and perfect for those who love a kick.

But this place doesn’t stop at mains. The dessert game here is strong. Kulfi, their traditional Indian ice cream, cools things down in a sweet, satisfying way. And if you’re just here for a drink and a bite? They’ve got a great beer selection, serve cocktails, coffee, and even offer vegan options and a salad bar, making it surprisingly inclusive for such a specialized menu.

One thing I particularly love is how The Gurkha Kitchen balances the familiar and the exotic. You can come in for something you know-say, a creamy Chicken Biryani-and walk out having discovered something new, like Paneer Tandoori Tikka or even Satay, done with a Nepalese twist. For brunch-goers, yes-they even serve Granola, offering a modern contrast to their bold traditional dishes.

Drinks-wise, they’ve thought of everything. From a cold Corona to a well-crafted cocktail, or a smooth glass of wine with your meal, you’re covered. Add to that halal food options and spirits if you're in for something stronger, and it's clear this isn't your average curry house.

From solo diners to groups looking for an evening of great food, live music, and maybe even a little adventure in the form of Rendang or Chicken Saag, this place feels like a hidden gem waiting to be found. Plus, with options like small plates, you can easily sample your way through the menu without overcommitting. That's a win for food lovers who like to taste it all.

So, whether you're after a quiet lunch, a lively dinner with friends, or just a quick takeaway that doesn’t skimp on flavor, The Gurkha Kitchen delivers-not just literally, but on every front that matters to foodies and casual diners alike.

Excellent find near my hotel in Maidstone. Lovely little Nepalese place doing fabulous authentic spicy dishes. All staff really helpful and friendly, recommended the chicken gurkhali curry which was fabulous, and had a wonderful kick to it. Great food and great value. Highly recommend it and definitely be returning when I'm back in Maidstone.

I have nothing but praise for this place. The food is delicious! And is a price match for majority of other restaurants despite the “£-” tag here on google reviews. If you get the restaurant owner as your server for the night, you are in for a treat. What a delightful guy with the most amazing energy, even when there were not many customers. Truly the best service I remember having in years. I even oversaw how accommodating he was to a family that complained about their foods spice-level, despite being warned and saying yes anyway.Highly recommend!
